'Putting Up': Blogging Event

I've yet to make my own jam or preserve and it's something I strive to learn more about. I have about 12 lemons in my fridge, a box of clementines, a bag full of tomatoes and I know I can make preserves with them- it hasn't happened yet but it's on the back of my mind.

I've been contemplating running my first event for the past month. (Scary stuff, for a fairly new blogger/new cook.) The thought of 'putting up' preserves, as it was once commonly called, appealed.

I asked, Rosie, from Rosie Bakes a Piece of Cake, who's more experienced in preserving to help along with the event and hey, if it's successful, (which we hope it will be) we will continue with it throughout the year, likely making it seasonal.

We're asking you to share your Jams and Conserves, Jellies, Marmalade, Curds and Butters, Chutneys, Pickles, Relishes and Preserves.

Once you've made your preserve send an email to puttingup(at)gmail(dot)com with the words 'putting up' in the title, by May 21st, with the following information:

* your name, and country
* the name of your blog
* the name of your jam or preserve
* a link to your post
* a photo of your entry (no larger than 500pix)

Please remember to link to both myself Pixie, You Say Tomahto, I Say Tomayto and Rosie, Rosie Bakes a Peace of Cake, so others can participate. You are welcome to use our "Putting Up" badge.

Feel free to present a recipe to go along with your preserve. In fact, that would be a wonderful idea, however, please keep in mind that the focus of this event are the Jams&Preserves and we really want to see that JAR!

Afterwards, we'll post a round up of all your entries and will raffle off a ticket for your chance to win this Jam & Preserve book. Have fun and we're looking forward to your creations!

You do not need to have a food blog to enter, so if you are are interested, simply send in your photo and recipe.

If you are new to preserving, please read my interview with Rosie below for help . It's sure to guide you in the right direction.

*The Roundup is now up ----> HERE*

Oooh, I already know what I'm going to make for this, I think! Great idea ^__^

Did you see Torchwood on Friday, by the way? I cried my eyes out, it was quite embarassing (I was at a party at the time, and there were three of us on the sofa sobbing for about half an hour, LOL) x

It's about time I got preserving again! This will be a great incentive, Pixie!

Hi Pixie, you've just hit on one thing that I am still truly phobic about doing (I havenever tried it either), but the challenge is now out there! I will have to put my thinking cap on and decide what kind of jam etc I would like to tackle.

I'm so in on this one- and this is an event I'll truly be excited about. I actually have something already on my list to make this week that might be appropriate for the event. But I'll have to do more, of course. This is not my area of expertise, so this gives me an opportunity to push myself to learn. Thanks for hosting!

Hey Pixie! I have never made jam in my life. My mom is the master at making jams and jellies. Let me think about what I can do.

Sorry I haven't been around lately but I have been really busy lately. It's been a long time I have made my last preserve, so count me in.
BTW last week you told me to remind you about you know what...

Holler said...

Hi Pixie, I have made my Jam! Hope you like it!

Johanna said...

this is not my area of expertise but is something I feel I should be doing so will be happy to take up the challenge - I think I get worried about jam setting, sterilising jars and that I don't have huge pots like my mum's - but maybe will start with a relish or chutney!

If you are only looking for jars of preserves, I'll join. But I have no plans to put anything up in the next few days.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c327/CEA608C/PictureB021.jpg

I've lemon, lime, clementine, orange and tangarine marmalades, peach, cherry, rasberrie and red currant preserves, various mustards and pickles. Meat stocks, tomato sauces and probably a few other things.

I love to can - I was thinking about making strawberry preserves for the first time - I usually can chilis and soups. I have a post on my blog about canning. Great idea!!!!!

Pixie has told me that past efforts will be appreciated.

Judging from labels still around I started canning, hot water bath, in 2004. As I recall I had made a chocolate cake with rasberry jam (home made) as the inter layer filling and wanted to preserve the excess jam. So I bought a dozen small (4 oz?) jars and used the roasting pan for a hot water bath.

I think I now have in excess of 50 dozen jars, perhaps 50% large mouth pints.

I now pressure can, and if the weather this weekend is rainy I will be making and canning beef stock.

We will see.

I do all of the canning, but my wife helps with a lot of my prep work, and also prepares a lot of her foods for me to can.

I hope to have pictures up on my blog early next week in any case.

And I will include my marmalade recipe, which is dead simple but large.

hey, does curry paste count?

ntsc said...

Well something is up at

http://blog.charcuteire.com/

but none of the pictures are that good. I'll get some better ones and add to the blog post. And include the recipe, which I left at home.

And get the e-mail off.
