Love It or Hate It? -Chance to Win Free Marmite

The first time I tried marmite, I found it to be absolutely revolting. Martin spread it over a slice of toast and it was honestly, at the time, disgusting. I think most of us who have tried Marmite can recall our 'first day'.

It wasn't till years later that I decided to give it another try and eventually I guess I kind of liked it, and would have it once a month. Today, I am known to spread butter, a bit of marmite and peanut butter on toast practically every day for breakfast. I am now a LOVER of marmite. YES, I ADORE MARMITE! But does everyone feel this way? Well, surprisingly no, as the slogan goes you either love it or hate it.

We had some strong opinions about Marmite at Julia's food forum:

Voices of Marmite Lovers (Say it Loud!!!!):

"My mother-in-law keeps a tiny jar of marmite in her cupboard for when I visit... to have my marmite on buttered toast for breakfast! She's a darling flowers

Stir a teaspoon of it into a mug of hot water. Instant marmite soup that is ooooh so warming on a cold day. My husband thinks it's revolting I would put a teaspoon of the stuff in things like a beef or lamb stew/casserole too, but I think the husband would kill me heheheh." - Nilmandra, Soy and Pepper

"Marmite I love, and twiglets too, yum! I only like marmite spread sparingly though. I remember being given a marmite sandwich once as a kid and it was thickly spread like jam or chocolate spread, it was disgusting!" -Julia, A Slice of Cherry Pie

"Marmite is a food stuff of the gods. I was brought up on the stuff! Brilliant on hot buttered toast cut into fingers and dipped into boiled eggs for breakfast. Delicious spread in a thin layer in an egg mayonnaise sandwich (really) or with fridge cold cream cheese. Adds a certain something to all my gravies, casseroles etc...

At boarding school we used to compete with each other to see who could spread it thickest on their bread and manage to eat it without feeling sick (generally, you only need a little on your bread!)

Got to be from a proper jar though - they have invented a horrible squeezy plastic bottle and the marmite that comes from it is a different consistency. No good at all!"
- Antonia, Food, Glorious Food

"I love marmite, but one of the worst trials of my life was once when my fiance's mother gave me marmite on toast. It was spread so thick, and I couldn't scrape it off in front of her, and I had to eat the whole slice without grimacing. *Shudder* I hastily turned down the offer of a second slice...

There's also a story my mum told me of when I was very little, where I got hold of a jar of marmite and shovelled it in my mouth and around my face. I then approached her, smeared with the stuff, looking a little troubled. She wiped off the marmite, and where it had been on my face was
bright red. Still hasn't put me off! Have you seen the marmite with champagne? They were selling it in Selfridges around Valentine's Day. Apparently it was very nice, but don't think you should meddle with perfection.

Have you ever had vegemite? That's godawful. Tastes nothing like marmite. (Just like weetbix are inferior to weet-a-bix). Marmite is named after a French style of cooking pot (though I expect everyone knows that!)"- Miss Bliss, Frolicking Foodie

"I love marmite!

I tend to use a spoon of it in gravies and have found it gives a great flavour when added to bolognese.

one of my fave snacks is a hobnob with marmite and a chunk of nice sharp cheddar." - Laura

And Voices of Marmite Haters (Pay no attention to these words):

"I have one word for Marmite.
Bleurgh!
I've tried to like it over the years, I really have - but to no avail. It's one of the very few foods I positively dislike." -Ghetti, A Forkful of Spaghetti

"Marmite is wrong." -Wendy, A Wee Bit of Cooking

"Yuck, nasty stuff! I think it is true that you either love it or hate it!" -Holler, Tinned Tomatoes.

I firmly stand by my love for marmite so much so, I'm going to raffle off a ticket * for a chance to win a FREE JAR of marmite. Simply leave a comment- good or bad about Marmite. If you never tried it, YOU TOO have a chance of finally getting your chance to do so-Just leave a comment and let me know you'd like to be included in the raffle. If you hate marmite so much so and don't want a jar of marmite for yourself than I hope you'll be happy to give it to someone you know who loves it or throw darts at it, whatever makes you happy!

I'm also going to give the winner a free bag of Twiglets:

They are known as "sticks dipped in Marmite" and I love them too! You have till Sunday, March 23rd and I will announce the Winners on Monday, the 24th. Good Luck!

I've never had Marmite. I've had Vegemite and found it particularly icky. I'd be curious to know what it tasted like.

i haven't had marmite in 15 years. I had one taste on toast at my swedish american friends house. I didn't love it, but now that i use nutritional yeast all the time, and LOVE IT (even wrote an ode to it), I am starting to rethink Marmite.

I'm game. On Top Chef, a contestant from NZ, used it on a Chicago Deep Dish Style Pizza. And it worked.

I notice you are naming and shaming! Well, I think your first impression of that disgusting tar was the correct one and you have obviously been brainwashed:p

I'm confused. Hate marmite, love twiglets... ?

Yes, I think most people who were fed it from a weaned baby love marmite. If you had to get a taste for it, it's more difficult.

Definitely having it on toast all next week for breakfast!! :D

I am one of those who have voted that I do not know what marmite is. I hope it's not like that washabi staff(I hope I remember the name).

I have to stand on the fence with this one Pixie. I have never heard of it. I'll bet if I asked my mom and dad though they would have an opinion seeing as it is a British thing...I am guessing:D Include me in:D

Well, as a Vegemite lover, I confess to liking Marmite and there is even another version called ProMite. All similar in many ways. Delicious on buttered toast.

I have been conversing with an English women via our blogs and we have begun "challenging" each other to prepare a similar dish based on the other's country. From my research into English food I have come upon many comments regarding Marmite and I'll tell you they are not positive! My thinking is that it would be fun for me to include Marmite in one of our challenges, I think it would give my English blogging buddy a good laugh.

I'm game!

I am with Val here. It might be a British thing because I have never heard of it, neither has my American partner. But I am willing to try it :D

Well, I don't exactly hate it, nor do I love it. My Brit husband feels the same. I think it's an acquired taste and if you grew up w/ it, then you acquire it! But, what I can tell you is that our friend from London brought us a bottle of Marmite in September, 2005 and we still have it in our fridge. So if anyone wants it from the US, it supposedly doesn't go off, and ha ha ha, i'll seriously mail it to you - email me at seppysills@yahoo.com! You may prefer Pixie's fresh, new one, though. Maybe I'm expressing my true feelings on the matter? - amy @ http://www.weareneverfull.com

If your prizes go to someone who has never had Marmite or Twiglets before, it will be interesting to see which ones s/he likes ;) There seems to be a number of people who dislike Marmite but like Twiglets. I personally think that they are just in denial hehehe...

As I said before, Marmite = food of the gods. Brilliant post, Pixie. Can't believe there are so many people who haven't tried marmite! Your prize should definately go to one of them...
Interestingly, I adore marmite, but I'm not wild about twiglets.

I have this memory of a friend from New Zealand who told me Marmite was absolutely wonderful. I tried it - he lied - what more can I say.

I was brought up on vegemite and but as a student converted to promite (yay peter g for mentioning it) and it is now comfort food for me - great on toast with cheese or tomato or avocado and in stews and soups and nut roasts and every thing! The trick to enjoying it is to be in love with someone who loves it (at least that is why I think my partner tried it once and thought it ok - although once first flush of love passed so did his tolerance for promite)

Some trivia for you - Vegemite for a brief time was called Pa-Will in response to Marmite!

Hope your marmite goes to one of those who have never heard of it - I am sticking with my promite! (but could have vegemite or marmite at a pinch)

When i was young, just about the time microwave ovens were about, i would spread a piece of bread with butter and marmite fold it in half and pop it in the microwave for 2 mins let it cool down and you get a chewy yummy marmite treat
