Small Maltese Pastizzi

Over the weekend, I made small versions of pastizzi, they're not exactly pastizzis but the filling is very similar to them. I've opted to just make the ricotta filled pastries. I'll attempt to make the well popular snack in the near future. Try them, they're easy to make and don't take long at all!

Small pastizzis

(makes 9)

Ingredients

125g ricotta
an egg
a small handfull of chopped parsley
1/2T parmesan cheese
pepper
250g of puff pastry

Roll out the puff pastry thinly. Use a small round cup about 9cm in diameter to cut out circles.

Mix the ricotta, half an egg, parsley, parmesan cheese and pepper in a small bowl.

Add about a Tablespoon of the mixture in the center of your circles and simply fold in half, pressing the edges firmly.

Brush a bit of the extra egg onto the pastry and cook in preheated 220C oven for 15 minutes or until the pastry is done. Watch them disappear within minutes!

You can buy pastizzi in Toronto, New York and Australia.

These look really delish Pixie - I have never heard of them before. Can't go wrong when ricotta is part of the filling. Also, loved the photo of BU - LOL!

I've never had a pastizzi but I think I would like one for sure.
Actually, I've never heard of a pastizzi.
Ahh! There is so much to learn in the food world.

These look so good. I just remembered we have a sweet in Cyprus called pastizzi which I have been thinking of making but it's totally different.

This looks so yums! Kind of like a version of calzone/pasty/empanada, etc. I really like this... it's a Maltese tradition? Very cool. My first boyfriend ever was Maltese and that was before I knew anything about it! 15 years later there is still so much to learn about the culture. Thanks for this!

Pixie, can you blame the guy for posing with a Pastizzi in his mouth?

They sound wonderful, who can argue with puff pastry?

These looks really good! Should it be eaten warm or can it be room temperature?

Thanks to all who have stopped by and left such kind comments. These aren't exactly the same as pastizzis but the filling is similar. I will attempt pastizzis in the future, the pastry, from what I understand can be a bit of a challenge!

grad- i like them best warm but room temperature is fine too :)

i've never heard of paztizzi, but these look good. i think it's a universally accepted law that any food is improved by (1) being covered in cheese or (2) being wrapped in pastry). therefore, a food made entirely of cheee and pastry should logically be the world's best food.
